Equine Vet (Equine Veterinarian)

Horses are your patients, and they're big, powerful, and can't tell you what hurts, so you diagnose and treat them out at barns, farms, and racetracks. Large-animal medicine on the road.

What it's like

What it's like to be a Equine Vet (Equine Veterinarian)

The work means examining, diagnosing, and treating horses, often traveling between farms with a truck full of gear. You handle everything from lameness to colic to dental work, with owners watching and worrying. A 1,200-pound patient is its own hazard, and reading an animal that can't talk is half the diagnosis.

What people underestimate is the physical risk and the on-call demands: horses are dangerous, emergencies happen at night, and the work is hard on the body. Income and hours can be punishing, especially early, and owners' emotions and money limits shape the care. Burnout is a known risk in the profession.

It fits someone calm around large animals, skilled, and physically tough. If you want a clinic desk or steady hours, the road and risk can wear. But if you love horses and hands-on medicine, and the trust an owner places in you, the work tends to be demanding and deeply rewarding.
