Hazardous Waste Specialist
At a generator, transporter, or treatment facility, you manage the handling, storage, transport, and disposal of hazardous waste under RCRA and state hazardous-waste laws — manifests, training, container management, and the records that survive inspections.
What it's like to be a Hazardous Waste Specialist
Days tend to mix container inspections, manifest preparation, vendor coordination, and the steady cadence of compliance work — walking the satellite accumulation areas, signing off on outbound hazardous-waste manifests, scheduling pickups with TSDFs, prepping for the state inspector's visit. You're often the responsible person on a generator's RCRA program. Inspection results and incident-free operating periods are the operating measures.
The harder part is often the personal exposure that RCRA programs carry — the named generator-program contact has individual accountability under federal and state law. Variance across employers is wide: at large generators the program is structured with EHS infrastructure; at small-quantity generators or smaller industrial sites you may be the entire program.
Folks who fit this role are regulatorily fluent, comfortable in industrial settings, and disciplined with documentation. CHMM, Hazwoper 40, and DOT HM-181 training anchor advancement. The trade-off is the consequence-asymmetry of hazardous-waste work — mistakes can carry significant penalties and reputational risk.
