What it's like

What it's like to be a Licensed Occupational Therapy Assistant (LOTA)

The day is direct patient care: leading therapy activities the OT designed, coaching through exercises, tracking progress, and documenting it. The work is physical, encouraging, and relationship-driven, and progress is often slow and hard-won β€” much of the job is keeping someone motivated through frustrating, incremental gains toward independence.

The setting changes the work sharply β€” a hospital, a school, a skilled-nursing facility, or home health each bring different patients and pace. You work under an OT's direction, so autonomy has limits, and productivity quotas can pressure the day in some settings. The work is physically and emotionally engaged.

This fits the patient, hands-on, and genuinely encouraging β€” people who find meaning in small, daily victories. If you want full clinical authority or quick results, the assistant role and slow progress can frustrate. But if helping someone relearn to dress, cook, or move feels deeply worthwhile, it's rewarding, in-demand, people-centered work.
