Per Diem Physical Therapist Assistant (Per Diem PTA)

Most days tend to involve working shifts at facilities that need temporary coverage — managing a caseload of patient treatments under the supervising PT's plan of care, adapting quickly to new settings and documentation systems, and delivering treatment while integrating into unfamiliar teams. You'll often rotate between multiple facilities depending on availability and need, deliver direct patient care across varied settings, and document in the facility's EHR.

The variance between settings is real — PTAs may pick up per-diem shifts across outpatient clinics, SNFs, home health, hospitals, or specialty settings; some PTAs work exclusively per-diem to supplement full-time roles; others combine per-diem at multiple facilities for flexibility; specialty per-diem (sports, pediatrics) commands premium rates in some markets. Hourly rates for per-diem work are often higher than full-time, but lacks benefits and PTO.
