Most weeks involve leading complex audits, mentoring junior auditors, and supporting client engagements. You'll often handle the largest or most complex sites (industrial facilities, hospital systems, large office portfolios), lead ASHRAE Level 2 or 3 audits, develop capital project business cases, and partner with facilities or sustainability leaders on implementation. Engineering depth (HVAC systems, lighting, controls, process loads) runs strong at this level.

What's harder than people expect is the financial-and-engineering synthesis — clients want both technically sound recommendations and persuasive ROI cases, and bridging those requires fluency in both worlds. Variance is significant between engineering consultancies (multi-client, project-based, design and analysis work), utility programs (high volume, prescriptive measures, often subsidized), and in-house corporate energy teams (single-client depth, long-term program ownership). CEM, PE, or LEED credentials shape advancement.

People who tend to thrive here are technically deep in building systems, comfortable with financial analysis, and credible to facility leaders and finance audiences alike. If you want strictly office work, the field component endures. If you find satisfaction in helping organizations actually reduce energy use and cost at scale, the work tends to lead into senior energy engineering, sustainability program leadership, or specialized energy consulting.
