Too much inventory wastes money. Too little stops production. You walk the tightrope between the two, every day.
As a Senior Materials Planner, you manage the procurement and inventory of materials needed for production β ensuring the right materials are available when production needs them without carrying excessive inventory. You work with MRP systems to generate purchase requirements, coordinate with suppliers on delivery schedules, and manage inventory levels. The senior title means you're handling the most critical material categories and improving planning processes.
Your day revolves around anticipation. You review MRP output, assess material shortages against production schedules, expedite late deliveries, adjust safety stock levels, and work with suppliers to resolve quality or quantity issues. You need analytical skills, supply chain knowledge, and the communication ability to coordinate between procurement, production, and suppliers.
The stakes are clear: if materials don't arrive, production stops. Line-down situations are extremely expensive, and you're the person accountable for preventing them. At the same time, carrying too much inventory ties up capital and warehouse space. You're optimizing two competing risks simultaneously.
