What it's like

What it's like to be a Journalist

The work runs on chasing stories and sources: interviewing, digging through records, verifying facts, and writing on deadline. Much of it is the unglamorous grind of confirming things, since getting it wrong has real consequences, and the pace can swing from slow reporting to frantic breaking news.

The industry has been hit hard, with shrinking newsrooms and pay, so the work is increasingly multi-skilled and sometimes precarious. The hours bend to the news, public scrutiny and pushback come with the territory, and you'll navigate the ethics of reporting on real people in hard moments. Outlets vary enormously in resources.

It tends to suit the curious, persistent, and a clear, fast writer β€” people driven to find and tell the truth. If you want stability, good pay, or low stress, the field's state makes that hard. But if informing the public and chasing real stories feels like a calling, the work can be vital and genuinely meaningful despite the headwinds.
