Life Drawing Model

Posing for life drawing classes — at art schools, university studios, drop-in figure drawing sessions — usually nude, holding a sequence of poses from quick gestures to longer holds. Stillness, body awareness, and comfort with being looked at carry the work.

What it's like

What it's like to be a Life Drawing Model

The work involves posing for artists in life drawing classes and studio sessions — typically nude, holding a sequence of timed poses that range from short gestural sketches (30 seconds to 5 minutes) to longer sustained holds (20-45 minutes). A session usually begins with a series of short poses to warm up the artists, moves to intermediate poses, and ends with one or two long sustained poses. You're responsible for the physical performance of holding those positions, returning to them accurately after breaks, and varying them enough across different sessions to give artists variety.

The physical demands are less visible than the social ones. Sustained muscle engagement during long poses, temperature regulation in studio environments (often warmer than comfortable), and the physical recovery required after a long session are real considerations. Models who last in the work develop awareness of how to take positions that are interesting without being physiologically unsustainable.

The work requires a genuine comfort with being looked at — not passively observed, but carefully examined by people who are trying to understand the human form at a precise level. That's different from most experiences of being seen, and it takes some adjustment for most people regardless of body confidence.

Art school vs. community class vs. private studioSession lengthHourly vs. per-session payShort gesture vs. long pose ratioDraped vs. undraped
Life drawing model work varies by venue type: university art department sessions tend to be formal, scheduled, and run by faculty with defined protocols; community drop-in sessions are less formal and often organized by artists' groups or cooperative studios. Private studio sessions for individual artists are different again — more intimate, more direction from the artist on specific poses. Pay ranges from around $15-25/hour for community classes to higher rates for private or specialized work. Some venues have changing rooms, heat management protocols, and defined pose sequences; others are more improvised.
