What it's like

What it's like to be a Cultural Resources Specialist

The work mixes surveys, site assessments, and regulatory review with reports and research. You consult on projects, coordinate with agencies and tribes, and much of the job is balancing preservation against a project's timeline. Findings can pause or reroute a project.

What's harder than it looks is standing between developers' speed and a duty to protect. Regulations are dense, fieldwork can be physical and remote, and consultation with tribes is sensitive, essential work. Findings vary, and so do the politics around them.

It tends to fit someone detail-oriented, diplomatic, and genuinely invested in the past. If you want a pure desk job or fast timelines, the fieldwork and bureaucracy may not suit. But if protecting history while real projects move forward feels meaningful, the work tends to reward it.
