Most shifts run on the sorting line — packages moving through automated sortation equipment, with the switcher monitoring the equipment, handling exception parcels (oversized, fragile, mis-labeled, problem destinations), and supporting the flow that keeps the sorting operation running. The work mixes equipment monitoring with manual handling of exceptions. Sort accuracy and throughput are the operating measures.

What's changed dramatically is the package volume — e-commerce growth has increased parcel volumes severalfold over recent decades, with corresponding investment in sorting automation at major carriers. Variance is wide: at USPS, FedEx, and UPS major hubs the work runs on highly automated sorting with shift-based crews; at smaller parcel operations it tilts more manual; at Amazon fulfillment the work runs on different sortation models.

It fits people who are physically capable, comfortable in fast-paced industrial environments, and willing to work the shift schedules parcel hubs run on. Forklift certification, hub-operations training, and shift-supervision experience anchor advancement. The trade-off is the physical demands of sorting work, the shift schedules (often overnight at high-volume hubs), and the modest pay typical of parcel-handler positions before tenure builds.
