A typical week often involves complex compliance review, program management, audit support, and senior advisory work — managing FTA preferential-origin programs, working through difficult denied-party or sanctions matches, supporting post-entry audits, providing senior guidance on export-control questions. You're often the senior compliance voice when matters require careful interpretation. Program effectiveness, audit outcomes, and absence of violations are the operating measures.

The harder part is often the multi-agency complexity — customs compliance touches CBP, BIS, OFAC, FDA, USDA, and parallel destination-country agencies, each with its own interpretation cycles. Variance across employers is wide: at large multinational importers you have specialty support; at smaller importers you carry broader scope individually.

The role suits people who are deeply regulatorily fluent, comfortable with technical writing, and diplomatic with auditors. Licensed Customs Broker, CCS, CES, and trade-specific credentials anchor seniority.
