Senior Drafting Technician

As a Senior Drafting Technician, you create detailed technical drawings and plans using CAD software, converting engineering designs into production-ready documentation. Your drawings include precise dimensions, tolerances, material callouts, assembly instructions, and all the information needed to manufacture, construct, or install a design. The senior title means you're handling the most complex drawings, setting drafting standards, and training junior drafters.

Your day is detail-intensive. You might spend hours creating a complex assembly drawing, ensuring every dimension, note, and tolerance is correct and follows company and industry standards (ASME, ISO, AWS). You work closely with design engineers who provide rough sketches or 3D models, and you produce the formal documentation that goes to manufacturing or construction. Precision isn't optional — a wrong dimension can result in parts that don't fit or structures that don't meet code.

The challenge is that drafting is increasingly automated and integrated into design. Many engineers do their own CAD work now, and 3D modeling reduces the need for traditional 2D drawings. Senior drafting technicians add value through speed, accuracy, standards knowledge, and the ability to catch design errors that engineers miss — but the role is evolving.
