Sustainability Officer

Days tend to involve strategy work, reporting cycles, stakeholder engagement, supplier or operations work on emissions and materials, and the cross-functional partnership that keeps the program moving. You might be reviewing a target-setting analysis Monday, presenting to leadership Tuesday, and meeting with procurement Thursday. The work tends to live in frameworks, reporting platforms, and the calendars of senior leadership and key operational partners.

The harder part is often wearing many hats at once. Strategy, reporting, communications, supplier engagement — at mid-market companies, all of these can land on a single sustainability officer. Prioritization under breadth is a daily craft. Variance across employers is real — large companies offer specialized teams; smaller ones offer broad scope but less depth. Executive sponsorship often determines what's possible.

People who tend to thrive here are strategically grounded, operationally capable, and comfortable being a generalist within sustainability. They tend to enjoy the breadth of the role and the visible impact of shaping a company's posture. The trade-off can be the loneliness of being the only sustainability person — peer support often comes from outside the organization.
