What gets demanding is the always-public nature of local elected office — every vote becomes part of the record, every social-media presence becomes part of the political identity, and constituents engage through both formal and informal channels constantly. Variance across cities is wide: large cities run with full-time council positions and professional staff support; smaller cities run part-time positions with little or no staff.

Folks who do well here typically carry community presence, comfort with public meetings, and the political instinct for reading the ward or at-large constituency. The trade-off is the time demands of council work that often run on top of full-time professional careers, and the campaign-cycle reality that elections refresh every two-to-four years.
