Material Coordinator
At a manufacturer or distributor, you coordinate the flow of materials through the operation — receiving, storage, internal moves, and the cross-functional touchpoints that keep production fed and inventory accurate.
What it's like to be a Material Coordinator
Most weeks tend to mix material flow coordination, planner and production interactions, supplier follow-up, and the steady cadence of inventory work — sitting with planners on material needs, working with the warehouse on receiving and putaway, chasing late shipments, supporting cycle counts and reconciliation. You're often the connective tissue between buying, warehouse, and production. Material availability for production and inventory accuracy are the visible measures.
The harder part is often the prioritization tension — when supply is short, every production line claims theirs is the most urgent. Variance across employers is wide: at process industries the role runs deep with structured procedures; at lighter manufacturing or distribution it tilts more generalist.
The role rewards people who are organized, calm under prioritization tension, and credible with both planners and the warehouse floor. APICS CPIM and SAP or Oracle fluency anchor advancement. The trade-off is operating between groups whose interests don't always align, with success measured by smoothness that no one notices.
