Senior Finance Consultant

A typical engagement involves diagnosing client situations, designing finance operating models, and helping implement them. You'll often be engaged for specific transformations — FP&A redesign, finance shared services, system implementations, M&A integration, or process redesign — and work alongside client finance teams to land outcomes. Engagement length varies from weeks to multi-year programs.

What's harder than people expect is the constant context-switching across clients — each engagement brings new systems, cultures, politics, and finance maturity levels, and ramping fast without losing depth on prior work takes practice. Variance is significant between Big Four advisory (structured methodology, large clients, often international travel), independent consulting firms (more flexible, often industry-specialized), and fractional CFO or solo advisory (longer engagements, deeper involvement). CPA, MBA, or specialty credentials are common.

People who tend to thrive here are broadly fluent in finance functions, comfortable with ambiguity, and skilled at building credibility quickly with new client teams. If you want predictable single-employer routine, the variety can wear. If you find satisfaction in shaping how multiple companies actually run finance, the work tends to build into senior consulting leadership, partner roles, or transitions into CFO or finance leadership positions.
